Los Gatos is a medium-sized community located in Santa Clara County, California. It is the 247th largest community in the state and has approximately eleven neighborhoods. A trendy and stylish municipality that is often viewed as a bedroom community of the greater Silicon Valley area. It features lots of green spaces, quiet streets and low crime rates. Several high-tech companies are headquartered in Los Gatos, including Netflix and Roku. It is a highly educated community where over 66% of adults have four-year degrees or more, which is more than three times the national educational average for U.S. communities. The city has more artists, designers and media workers than more than 90% of U.S. communities. This high percentage of artists and art types helped shape Los Gatos into a unique town in terms of looks and atmosphere. It is a warm and welcoming and diverse community in terms of race, ethnicity, religion and more. The majority of residents identify as Caucasian or Asian. The most common ancestries in the community include German, Irish English and Italian. Nearly 21% of residents in Los Gatos were born outside the United States. However, despite its somewhat global nature, English remains the primary language in the community, followed by Spanish and Chinese.
The community spans 11.25 square miles of primarily land area graced with just a touch of water covered area. It is a wealthy community in comparison to both state and national economic standards. It is primarily a white-collar community, where over 93% of the workforce is white-collar in nature. Nearly 10% of the community’s workforce works from home, via telecommuting, home-based businesses and freelance endeavors. In 2017, the population was 30,724 and in 2018, the estimated population density was around 2,735 people per square mile. In 2017, the estimated median household income was $147,924 and the per capita income was $82,160. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was over $1,000,000, the mean price on all housing units was over $1,000,000 and the median gross rent was $2406 per month. The current top five employees appear to be Netflix, El Camino Hospital Los Gatos, Courtside Tennis Club Safeway and the Los Gatos Elementary School District.
Los Gatos means “the cats” and the area was named such in the mid-1800s due to the local wildlife, like cougars and bobcats that roamed the land. Also, in the mid-1800s, the community was founded and the first business in the area was a flour mill. The mills storage annex still stands today and now houses a museum of the area’s history. In the 1920s, the community drew in many artists, musicians, writers, actors and others bohemian souls who helped shape this unique city. Growth continued and by the 1980s they city had reached it’s build-out point where growth slows or stops entirely due to lack of space.
